Little Muskox, Big Journey

Nature is beautiful — and often unpredictable. On April 30th, the Yukon Wildlife Preserve welcomed its first muskox calf of the year. But shortly after his arrival, it became clear that something wasn’t quite right. Despite hopes for a strong maternal bond, the mother muskox wasn’t allowing the newborn to nurse. The reason for this rejection remained unclear —  the muskox bull was also seen interacting with the calf in a way that raised safety concerns.

To protect the calf, our team made the decision to intervene. He was brought into our Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, where he began receiving around-the-clock care and 1L of specialized milk replacer daily. While it wasn’t the beginning we’d envisioned for him, the calf showed resilience and strength from the very start.

At the same time, the veterinary team kept a close watch on the mother muskox. When it became apparent she hadn’t passed her placenta, she was safely immobilized and given medication to support the process. After several days of monitoring in a separate enclosure, she recovered well and was eventually reunited with the rest of the herd.

As for the little muskox calf — he’s growing quickly! On May 22nd, at just over three weeks old, he was moved out of the Rehabilitation Centre and into a transitional habitat adjacent to the main herd. This new space allows our team to continue feeding him safely while also helping him gradually reintroduce to his species — a gentle reminder that he is indeed a muskox, even if his first few weeks have looked a little different.

Though he’s still receiving bottle feedings and close care, he’s doing well. If you're visiting the Preserve, you might just catch a glimpse of him  — look up towards the office when standing at the Thinhorn Sheep Ewe's feeding station — but as always with muskox sightings, a zoom lens or binoculars will be your best friend!

I think about how my first few months living in the Yukon feel like the drawn-out, long sunrises and sunsets up here. They are often multicoloured, with bright hues and dark contrasts, and they seem to last ages. This is, apparently, all because of the Earth’s tilt and rotation. I was asking everyone about this my first few weeks here. I needed to understand why the sun seems to take longer to rise, fall and hover at the horizon compared to anywhere I’ve ever been. Turns out when you're farther north, the sun takes a much shallower angle as it rises and sets! Instead of popping straight up and down like it does near the equator, it moves more horizontally across the sky.

This makes the transition between night and day stretch out longer. Someone said to me, “Think of it like a ball rolling up and over a hill—if it goes straight up and down, it’s quick, but if it follows a more gradual slope, it takes longer. That’s basically what the sun is doing near the poles.” I’m thinking of making an animation of this to try to make more sense of it physically. This effect gets even more extreme as you go farther north. It’s why there is midnight sun near the summer solstice, and in winter, it gives us the long, drawn-out sunrises and sunsets that I have cherished and gawked at almost every day since I moved up. The territory is a mix of extremes: light and darkness, with a lot of expansive grey and blue sky in between. It’s 10am as I write this and the clouds are pink with sunrise.

Sometimes I feel like time is flying and I can’t seem to muster the energy to chase it. But just as the sun moves differently up here, my sense of time has changed too. The other day I was working a shift at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve and I asked my coworkers what they think about our relationship to time versus other animal’s relationship with it. 

We got into a discussion about how time in the sense of minutes and hours is an abstract human-constructed concept. We are the only animals that track time like this. Every other animal seems to be deeply connected to their internal clocks and their circadian rhythms.

Humans are obsessed with time and trying to name it; we think we can control it, track it, chase it, kill it, steal it, make it and run out of it. The more time I spend with the wildlife in the Yukon, the more absurd and ridiculous these ideas become.

The sun lingering on the horizon up here sometimes gives me the illusion of time stretching. I’ve started to feel that slowness elsewhere, like when I’m alone observing the musk ox. Here’s what I wrote in my journal one morning:

Being around the musk ox, I leave my personal human sense of clock time. I feel something different. I wonder if it is “evolutionary time”. The musk ox are an ancient species — they are considered ice age survivors. I learned today that they are one of the oldest surviving large herbivores on Earth. I am pulled into the physical and spiritual around them. Maybe that’s a different place to be from the linear, the daily clock we all measure our “own” minutes, hours, days, weeks, years by. The musk ox is not keeping track of time in this way. They use their internal clocks. All the animals here do.

They never let me get too close, which is probably best. The musk ox are able to run up to 60km/hour and can be an aggressive species.

 

After the discussion with my coworkers, I ponder this difference between the way we think of time and the relationship the musk ox have with it. Is it a contributor to the illusion of separation we’ve created between us and the wildlife? Between human beings and the natural world? It only took a few shifts working at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve to realize I was sensing something powerful and healing about the places I’ve been spending time in— the preserve, the North, and my cabin in the Boreal forest*.

I couldn’t stop thinking about the illusion I had been living under— the idea that we are separate from the animals and the wild. Far away in our cities, being raised to believe that humans are the centre of everything. We’ve elevated ourselves but we are simply part of nature like the rest of these animals. It feels silly to have to even state this and maybe many of you already understand it. But I grew up in a big city and it’s taken me living in a forest, in a territory with one of the lowest population densities in the world to really make some sense of it.

*The boreal forest, also known as the snow forest, is a biome characterized by snowy winters and freezing temperatures. It’s the world's largest land biome. This forest converts carbon dioxide into oxygen on a massive scale (the air is very good up here ☺ ). The snow stays on the ground for many, many months.

Learning from the wild

I heard a term recently: Ecological Identity. It bears the questions: Who are we in relation to nature? How do we fit with what’s around us? I wrote that the musk ox are considered ice age survivors. When I give my tours to visitors at the preserve, people are often shocked and intrigued by this information. I like to remind them that we as homo sapiens are also ice age survivors! Multiple ice ages* in fact: at least two in the last 200,000 years. 

Yet our evolutionary paths have remarkably diverged. The lives of the musk ox are still closely attuned to the rhythms of nature, as they were during the ice age. When I’m around them, it feels evident that they are living in harmony with their surroundings. I sense that they are in a deep state of attention. In a way, are they living in the timeless? We’ve created cities and systems that can obscure the natural rhythms of day and night, the seasons, and the ecosystems around us. These differences highlight not just how far we’ve come, but also how much we might still learn from the creatures who remain deeply connected to this earth we share. The only time I’ve been able to feel this kind of harmony for an extended period is when I’m on long camping trips or boat rides where I feel almost lost in the sea. It makes me think that my over-structured, calendar relationship with time is like a surface-level experience of life. Like the restless, choppy waves at the surface of the ocean.

The musk ox relationship with time might be more like the water deep below the surface, where things appear calm and more still. In a way, I feel consoled by the lesson of the musk ox on this day. If the Yukon’s light has changed how I see time, the musk ox has helped how I feel it.

 *When people say “the last ice age”, they’re usually referring to the last glacial period (that ended around 10,000 years ago), when ice sheets covered much more of the planet. I recently learned from my coworker at the preserve, Danial, that scientifically speaking, we're technically still living in an ice age since there is permanent ice at the poles. What we're in now is an interglacial period, meaning a warmer phase within an ongoing ice age. If things followed the natural cycle, we'd eventually head back into a glacial period, but human-driven climate change is disrupting that pattern.

Anywho, that’s all the *time* I have for today. Maybe time isn’t something to track, chase, or control. Maybe, like the musk ox and the Yukon sun, it’s something to settle into.

The guest on my bus tour with the British accent began his comment, ‘this is an impertinent question, so you don’t have to answer it…

‘Oh’? I thought,

‘What is the dumbest animal on the Preserve?’ he continued.

We were at the Thinhorn rams with their big curly horns, and as if on cue, one of the older ones turned to us and gave us the most goggle-eyed dumbest look you could imagine. Everyone laughed and I didn’t have to answer.

But how about we flip that question and ask instead, ‘What is the smartest animal on the Preserve?’ 

First, one might ask, what is intelligence?  One definition of intelligence is the ability to adapt to new situations and to learn from experience. However, a little bit of research reveals that we can’t really answer which species is more intelligent than another. Animals are well suited to what they need for survival through instinct and physical adaptations, (instinct is behaviour oriented and is defined as; ‘an inborn impulse or motivation to action typically performed in response to specific external stimuli’. Today instinct is generally described as a stereotyped, apparently unlearned, genetically determined behaviour pattern. While we can identify faster learners and slower learners within a species we can’t readily compare the intelligence of different species. Personally, I cannot dam up a creek using mud and sticks and my bare hands but does that mean I am dumber than a beaver. I hope not.

We have learned that intelligence tests involving people can be culturally biased. Devising tests that try to fairly compare different animal species is even harder. In one test the animal subjects were required to learn a sequence of visual cues to receive a food reward. Monkeys learned quite quickly, rats more slowly. But rats have poor eyesight and when the cues were changed from visual to scented the rats learned as fast as the monkeys.

Even trying to compare dogs to captive wolves is problematic as a dog’s primary problem-solving tool is us. Ball rolls under the couch, get your human. Hungry, get your human. Need to go outside, get your human and so on.

Additionally, most animals have a good amount of persistence, especially when searching for  food. Hence the annual warnings from the conservation officers about the danger of having attractants in our yards in regarding bears. If, after weeks of trying, the fox finally manages to break into the hen house, is that persistence or intelligence or a combination of both? A captive wolf in a sanctuary during an experiment to test methods of non-lethal predator control challenged an electrified barrier 800 times! Now that’s persistence.

And if a captive muskox spends hours or even days ramming his boss (the flat bit of thick horn across his forehead) into a welded steel industrial gate separating him from the female muskox until it breaks; that is certainly persistent but is it intelligent? Nevertheless, the gates at the Preserve between the male and female muskox have been reinforced.

It is not difficult to suggest that predators probably have the most advanced ability to learn since their meals tend to run away and hide. They must continually adapt to fluid situations in order to eat. But the most amazing example of non-human learning I have run across is reported by Bernd Heinrich, author of, Ravens in Winter’, where he presented four groups of ravens with a puzzle consisting of pieces of meat hanging from strings.  One of the wild ravens, without having watched anyone else’s attempts, after pondering the problem for a period of time, flew straight to a perch above a hanging piece of meat, pulled the string up, put his foot on it to hold the slack and repeated the sequence until he had reeled in the piece of meat. So, while they are not part of the Preserve’s collection, there are certainly ravens on the Preserve and they get my vote as smartest.

How are Animals Named?

Throughout history, various languages and cultures have contributed to a wide - and often confusing - vocabulary used to describe animals' genders, the young stages of their lives and what they may be called when they are gathered together in groups.

Males are called bucks. Females are called does & young are fawns.
A group of deer are often called a herd but more fun versions include a bevy, a bunch, a rangale or a parcel
- though a parcel is often in reference to a group of young deer.

Historically, adjectives were the labels of choice to communicate animal gender identifiers. A broad selection of these labels has resulted - which are not universally applied, even within the same species. For example: in the deer family or Cervidae, males are identified as bucks and females are called does. In moose, and caribou - also members of the Cervidae family - males are called bulls and females are called cows while elk males are referred to as stags.

Generally these cervids in groupings would be called herds (though moose are not actually herd animals) while elk can be also called a gang - watch out!

Not limited to just fur-bearing creatures, these titles are applied to other species and there are often departures from the naming conventions used. Rabbits are called bucks and does while steelhead trout males are called bucks, with females being called hens rather than does.

There is also a vast difference in the scientific naming of all creatures. Over the centuries a number of early scientists attempted to establish a format to classify animal groups. Ancient Chinese created the first recorded reference in 2700 BC, but it was quite limited and focused primarily on flora (vegetation) of their geographic region.

  1. Remember Fox and the Hound? A male is called a tod (sometimes a reynard or a dog), while females are referred to as vixens.
  2. Young are most commonly called kits but can also go by cubs, or pups.
  3. The collective noun to describe a group of foxes are a skulk, earth or a leash! These names are related to fox behaviour corresponding respectively as a group hunting together, a mama fox with her kits, and a group of domesticated or captive foxes as a leash.

Now, there are other foxes including Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), swift fox (Vulpes velox), fennec fox (Vulpes zerda), and others across the world for a total of 12 species that comprise the largest genus, Vulpes.

Smaller classifications exist within the genus Urocyon which include the gray fox. The only extant species of fox belonging to the Otocyon genus is that of the bat-eared fox found in the African savanna.

Ancient Greek philosopher and scientist Aristotle described a large number of natural groups, and although he ranked them from simple to complex, his order was not an evolutionary one. He was far ahead of his time in separating invertebrate animals into different groups and was aware that whales, dolphins, and porpoises had mammalian characters and were not fish. The Aristotelian method dominated classification for many centuries. During this period, it provided a procedure for attempting to define living things through careful analysis, it neglected the variations between living things.

In 1758 Carolus Linnaeus, who is usually regarded as the founder of modern taxonomy and whose books are considered the beginning of modern botanical and zoological nomenclature, drew up rules for assigning names to plants and animals. He was the first to use binomial nomenclature consistently. Although he introduced the standard hierarchy of class, order, family, genus, and species, his main success in his own day was providing workable keys, making it possible to identify plants and animals from his cataloging. Linnaeus was the father of the Field Guide.

Over the centuries a number of paleontologists, biologists, and scientists contributed to refining Taxonomy as we know it today. Perhaps the most notable of these was Charles Darwin - who explained his theory of evolution by describing how animals changed over time, yet still remained within specific categories in taxonomy.

Below is a table defining each classification of steppe Bison, the 15,000-year-old ancestor of today’s wood bison. As you can see, their classifications are not much different, other than identifying wood bison as a sub-species.

While their scientific classifications are very similar, the animals themselves were quite different. Steppe bison persisted through the great extinction of the last Ice Age up until about 5,400 years ago. A relatively recent find in Whitehorse city limits proves steppe bison persisted giving rise to the bison seen in the Yukon today but are not the direct descendants of the steppe bison.

Darwin’s famous illustration The Tree of Life displays the evolutionary relationships between species. This idea caused a great deal of controversy when he concluded that mankind evolved from the apes which was contrary to the religious teachings of the day.

Muskox and bison - both species are members of the Bovidea family. In this family, males are called bulls and females are called cows. The young are called calves and groups of both species are referred to as "herds". But that is where the line is drawn for their nomenclatures. The Inuit name for muskox is "omingmak," which means "the animal with the skin like a beard." Geographically, today's populations of muskox and bison do not overlap and their adaptions to winter survival as a result are very different.

We can see from this phylogenetic tree how bovids (horn bearing) and cervids (antler bearing) are related to each other. The animals with icons represent those species at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. The Yukon has 9 of the 11 ungulates of North America, excluding the bighorn sheep and pronghorn antelope. What's also interesting to note is that mountain goats are their own genus and muskox are more closely related to sheep and goats than they are bison!

When we dive into the scientific name we can see how the classifications carry over. For instance muskox, Ovibos, share genus naming from sheep and cow. Caribou or Rangifer tarandus is reindeer in Latin, from the Greek tárandos, also meaning reindeer. So when someone asks you the difference between caribou and reindeer, you can say, nothing! (Except, reindeer fly!)

Beyond the labels used for animal species, their offspring also suffer from a variety of descriptors to classify their young age. There are calves, fawns, foals, pups, cubs, kittens, chicks, hatchlings, fry and owlets to name a few. Yes, there is a lot to remember, but with practice you can master the various names used to identify animal difference.

These descriptor variations also extend to the words used to describe a group of an individual species. There are herds, colonies, congresses, tribes, swarms, flocks, droves, clutches, packs, murders, litters, pods, braces, convocations, gangs, schools, hordes, gaggles, bands, and numerous other words used to describe a group of same-species creatures. There are even names given to groupings of animals that are, in fact, unlikely to group together given their territorial and/or solitary nature - like owls, moose or wolverines.

Even within a class of animals like birds, its a complex web of classification and further to each species' grouping names.

Birds:

  • In general - Flock
  • Eagle - convocation
  • Falcon - cast
  • Owl - parliament, stare or wisdom
  • Swallows - flight, gulp
  • Swans - bevy, wedge
  • Ptarmigans - covey
  • Ravens - unkindness, rave, conspiracy
  • Magpies - tiding, mischief
  • Grouse - pack, covey
  • Crane - sedge
  • Ducks - raft in water and skein when flying
    • mallards on the ground can be called a sord
  • Geese - gaggle
  • Loons - asylum

 

 

Other mammals:

  • Squirrel - scurry
  • Wild canids, dogs - pack
  • Goats - tribe
  • Otters - romp
  • Porcupines - prickle
  • Voles - colony
  • Wolverines - mob
  • Martens - richness

Invertebrates:

  • Bees - grist, hive or swarm
  • Caterpillars - army
  • Flies - business

Amphibians (no reptiles in the Yukon):

  • Frogs - army
  • Toads - knot

Fish:

  • Trout - school
  • Salmon - bind, draught or run

It's an interesting read to understand the many different words used to describe an animal’s gender, how they are identified when they are youngsters and in groups together. Of course, the list above is centered on animals that make their home in the Yukon - imagine some of the animals that live in your neck of the woods, or places you've travelled to, and what those animals' naming classifications may be.

What is more, the naming of animal's as described by history must also recognize that many of these species, (beyond the few mentioned like Wapati and Omingnak), also hold Traditional and First Nation naming of animals that are descriptive, communicating the animals' place, use or spiritual significance.

Bison versus muskox! What's the same? What's different? Who is more cool? Top 5 reasons muskox and bison are NOT the same animal, at all.

One of the first animals visitors see when they explore the Preserve is bison. As folks continue to explore the Preserve they will later come upon another large, brown animal and often say, 'hey, look bison again!" In fact, they are looking at muskox. Both animals in their appearance can look similar but they are indeed quite different!

Similarities:

  1. Both animals belong to the Bovidae family.
    • These animals comprise the biological family of mammals that are cloven-hoofed and ruminants. A member of this family can be called a bovid.
  2. Both animals (and both males and females) have horns.
    • While shape and size differ the basic structure is always that of a pair of simple bony protrusions without branches, and each covered in a permanent sheath of keratin.
  3. It's a family affair.
    • both species form herds, and their social structure often involves a dominant individual. With this grouping the species is usually polygnous.
    • Safety is a game of numbers and larger groupings allow for greater protection of the herd than if they were solitary animals. 
  4. The Holocene, Ice Age and Pleistocene - History.
    • Both present day species, Ovibos moschatus and Bison bison athabascae were on the land during the Early Holocene (10,000 - 5,000). Both current day species were reintroduced in the Yukon.

Differences:

  1. Physical appearance
    • Bison are bigger and heavier. Males can be almost twice the weight of a muskox. As an Arctic specialist and ice age survivor it pays for muskox to be compact. Don't worry though, the biggest land mammal in North America is adapted well to survival in the North.
    • Muskox have a lot of hair, everywhere! Two coats including an exterior, thick and long guard hair layer called their skirt - 'cause it goes down to the ground. Underneath that, a soft, extremely warm wool called qiviut, keep the muskox warm in the wild Arctic. Now, wood bison have a massive build, a pronounced hump on their shoulders and shaggy hair around their head, face and forelimbs.
    • Horns grow differently - muskox sport almost mustache looking horns form on top of the head, with males having larger and denser helmet structure to absorb the headbutt actions that happen in rut season. On the other horn, er, hand . . . bison have horns grow from the sides of their head and quickly curve upwards.
  2. Bison are like wild cows, while muskox are more closely related to mountains goats.
    • This is represented in subfamily observation where the muskox is classified under the Caprinae subfamily.
  3. What happened when the cow and the goat walked into the bar?
    • Nothing - they wouldn't be in the same place at the same time! Muskox are a narrow niche specialist, occupying the high arctic tundra of the Circumpolar North! Wood bison roam grasslands, forest and mountain slope environments across northwestern North America.
  4. Fight or flight?
    • Bison choose flight - they will flee as a herd for safety when threatened.
    • Muskox fight - they form a defensive circle with young inside and adults facing outwards. This behaviour makes sense given we know that muskox live in an arctic tundra environment. Fleeing would be a near endless, waste of precious energy.
  5.  History is confusing but muskox are true Ice Age survivors.
    • While wood bison were present during the Holocene  it was a narrow window within this geological epoch that the Bison bison evolved from its predecessors Bison priscus (commonly known as Steppe Bison) and Bison occidentalis. Both subspecies of present day bison (plains and wood) are reintroductions to their current ranges. 
    • Muskox, Ovibos moschatus not only were present during the Holocene they were present during the Pleistocene. Muskox as we know them today - tundra muskox or Ovibos moschatus  persisted alongside other Ice Age animals like the Helmeted Muskox and other large megafauna like Steppe bison, and mammoths but they did not go extinct!
